Fundraising for Musicians: Give your music stems away for a donation

Remix for a good cause

For those of us who are a bit more technically savvy, remixing music stems* is a great way to lend what you have created for others’ derivative works. DJs are always on the hunt for something to sample for their latest mix. Many times it’s a challenge for them to find music that’s available in stems, high quality, and legal to use. Do them, and a nonprofit, a favor by giving away your music stems for a donation. It doesn’t cost you anything and provides a DJ a new track(s) to sample. Before uploading your music stems, make sure you’ve uploaded your song under the Creative Commons copyright license. That way everyone is protected and you still get to hold on to the rights of your intellectual property.

Donations and promotions are factored into the mix

As an added benefit, the DJs will inadvertently be promoting your music for you as well. That’s fundraising AND promotion rolled into one. Use your fundraising page email tool to send your donors a exclusive download link of your music stems.

Who knows maybe you can team up with a DJ and then promote the finished product for another donation download. In true remix form, it’s the gift that keeps on giving!

Create a personal fundraising page and start accepting donations for music stems.

* Music stems are the individual tracks that a song is made of. As an example, a guitar stem is the guitar part(s) in a song recording. Each recording, unless the recording was done with a single mic, has tracks that are bounced to one final mix that listeners hear. DJs use individual music stems to create new works by remixing the individual song’s multiple stems.
